Timothy Hussner sits in his room at home in Liberty, New York on Oct. 11, 2014. A janitor for the local school district at night, Hussner has spent the last several years pursuing his goal of becoming a graphic designer through classes at a local community college.

After seven hours in chest-high flood waters, Gerda Mae Thompson's last memory before losing consciousness was her husband of 65 years, Edward Thompson placing his head on her shoulder and breathing his last breath. Shortly after, rescue crews saved Gerda from the home that she had shared with Edward for 48 years by pulling her through a window and away from the flood waters that ravaged much of Rainelle and other communities across West Virginiam in late June.
